SS-31 (Elamipretide) 10mg
Mitochondria-Targeted Tetrapeptide · Cardiolipin Binder · Lyophilized Powder · Purity ≥99% (HPLC)
SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide, Bendavia®, MTP-131) is a synthetic mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide of the Szeto–Schiller (SS) peptide family. With the sequence H-D-Arg-2',6'-dimethylTyr-Lys-Phe-NH₂, it carries an alternating aromatic–cationic motif that drives selective accumulation in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds to cardiolipin — a phospholipid essential for mitochondrial cristae structure and electron transport chain function.
By stabilizing cardiolipin, SS-31 helps preserve mitochondrial architecture, reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and improve cellular bioenergetics, making it one of the most widely used research tools in mitochondrial biology, ischemia–reperfusion injury, neuroprotection and aging research. Each vial is supplied as a sterile lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder to ensure maximum stability.

Mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of the cell, and their dysfunction is a common denominator of aging, ischemic injury, neurodegeneration and many rare metabolic diseases. A key structural element of healthy mitochondria is cardiolipin, a unique phospholipid found almost exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it anchors the protein complexes of the electron transport chain and maintains cristae shape.
SS-31 was developed as part of the Szeto–Schiller peptide series — small cell-permeable peptides designed to reach mitochondria selectively. Thanks to its cationic and aromatic residues, SS-31 accumulates in the inner mitochondrial membrane and binds cardiolipin with high selectivity, without acting on normal mitochondria in a disruptive way. This targeted mechanism accounts for the compound's well-documented safety profile in preclinical and clinical research.
In published studies, SS-31 has been investigated in a broad range of settings, including:
- Cardiac ischemia–reperfusion injury and myocardial infarction models;
- Renal protection and acute kidney injury research;
- Neuroprotection, including models of neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment;
- Aging research, where late-life SS-31 treatment reversed mitochondrial deficits in aged animal models;
- Rare mitochondrial disorders such as Barth syndrome, where elamipretide has received regulatory approval as a therapy in the U.S.
As the prototypical mitochondria-targeted cardiolipin-binding peptide, SS-31 remains a benchmark compound for studying mitochondrial structure–function relationships and for evaluating new mitochondrial therapeutics.
Mechanism of Action
Handling & Storage Guidelines
- Lyophilized powder: Store at -20°C (stable up to ~12 months) or -80°C for longer term. Keep the vial sealed and protect from moisture.
- Before opening: Allow the vial to reach room temperature and briefly centrifuge to ensure the full contents collect at the bottom of the vial.
- Reconstitution: SS-31 is water-soluble. Add sterile water, saline or pH 7.0–8.0 buffer gently along the vial wall and swirl slowly until fully dissolved; avoid vigorous shaking.
- Reconstituted solution: Store at -20°C (up to ~1 month) or -80°C for longer periods; avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles by aliquoting.
- General: Handle with standard laboratory protective equipment (gloves, lab coat, eye protection).

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Is SS-31 the same as Elamipretide?
A: Yes. SS-31, Elamipretide, Bendavia® and MTP-131 all refer to the same tetrapeptide (D-Arg-DMT-Lys-Phe-NH₂). "SS-31" is the original research designation from the Szeto–Schiller peptide series; "Elamipretide" is its international nonproprietary name (INN).
Q2: Why is SS-31 selective for mitochondria?
A: Its alternating aromatic–cationic structure gives it a net positive charge that drives accumulation in mitochondria (which maintain a strongly negative inner membrane potential), followed by selective binding to cardiolipin in the inner membrane.
Q3: How should I store it after receiving?
A: Keep unopened vials at -20°C (up to ~12 months) or -80°C for longer storage. Once reconstituted, freeze at -20°C and use within about a month; aliquot to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Q4: Is a Certificate of Analysis (COA) available?
A: Yes, third-party tested COA documentation can be provided for each batch. Please contact our customer service with your order number.
